RADIO SHOW HELPS FAMILIES WITH ALZHEIMER’S AND LIFE ISSUES
From Alzheimer’s to unplanned pregnancy, the “The United for Life Hour” radio show is addressing some of the most challenging life issues facing society today. Broadcasting from the Birmingham Diocese chancery studio, WQOH 1480 AM is now in its fourth month of live programming of the weekly show, which airs Wednesdays at 11 AM.
According to Lee John Bruno, CEO of the United for Life Foundation that sponsors the show, the program is helping many people in need. “Feedback from listeners indicates that the show is a dynamic resource for the community, where listeners can get practical help living our faith, and keep abreast of important life issues and events, “ Bruno said. “Just last week, Bishop Robert J. Baker joined in the second half hour to express support for the show and to discuss some upcoming ‘Forty Days for Life’ and rosary events in the Birmingham diocese,” Bruno said. “Many more people were informed and able to participate in the events.”
Each week, the show hosts present an array of ”alpha to omega” topics and guests who talk about difficult situations from the beginning to the end of life, offering listeners hope and help and an opportunity to share their personal interests by phone or email. In the first half hour, “Focus on Life Radio” hosted by Cheryl Ciamarra, concentrates on pregnancy, childbirth, motherhood and other beginning-of-life issues. On each show, Cheryl presents the latest in life-related current events and interviews a subject matter expert. Past guests have included clergy in national pro-life leadership, lay leaders of local pro-life community events, experts in contraception matters, a lactation expert, a doula birth assistant, and testimonies of people experienced in practical pro-life work and abortion recovery. In the second half at 11:30 AM, “Embracing Alzheimer’s in Mind and Heart” is hosted by Ellen Marie Edmonds, author of the book “Embracing Dementia: A Call to Love.” Focusing on Alzheimer’s disease, Ellen discusses issues associated with dementia disease and periodically interviews an expert guest. Presented in a faith-based, love-driven theme, the show presents series of topics including the fear of Alzheimer’s disease, better understanding signs and disease progression, the importance of seeing the child inside someone with dementia disease, relationship and role reversal, and practical ways to care for a loved one or patient. Past guests included a neurologist who discussed the use of creative arts in dementia care for families and facilities. Future topics and guests address issues such as dealing with behavior issues, managing grief in the dementia patient and family members, the importance of the spiritual life, and practical planning for domestic, legal, medical, financial, and social issues associated with dementia disease.
